Because people are passionate about religion and most cannot accept another's opinion. I'm not saying that they should believe the other opinion but merely instead of abusing it they should give their opinion in a diplomatic fashion. For example: A mechanic came into work and we got onto the discussion of theology. Despite the fact that he had been told to NEVER discuss religion nor politics, because people get too upset and the discussion becomes an argument. The same applies here, unfortunately.

I'm suprised you need to ask. It's an emotive subject on which we all have our own unique views and beliefs.Whereas an answer in the Legal category, for example, is based on inarguable facts (the laws that exist) which can be proved or disproved, an answer in the religious category, other than where it covers the most absolute basics of facts (e.g. how many books in the Bible? What are the 5 Pillars of Islam?) is always open to interpretation. And because people are so very passionate about what they believe religiously if they see an answer that conflicts with their own beliefs- which by definition they see as being the "right" ones- of course they will rate it down. The problem with religion is that although it is subjective, in order to believe in it, you must believe it to be objective. A religious argument is by nature impossible to win.

Because they clearly don't understand that it's not whether, or not you agree with their theological principles, but whether or not, they have provided accurate evidence to support their claim. For instance, I am a Christian, and I have posted answers that someone clearly did NOT agree with; however, I had proof to support my comments. Clearly, some people are argumentative and simply want to give someone a negative rating based upon their answer. Their answer should ONLY receive a negative rating if it's FALSE.
