  • There have been some in the Church who have speculated on the possibility that Jesus was married and some have even gone so far as to suggest that He was a polygamist. Those that suggest this have suggested that His wives were Mary and Martha (the sisters of Lazarus) and Mary Magdalene. However, these speculations have never been given the weight of Church doctrine. The Church's official stand is that Jesus' bride is the Church. Any other assertions about this matter are merely speculation on the part of those put them forward. (I, myself, have put forward the circumstantial case for Jesus having been married. However, in stating that case I have always included the disclaimer that it is a purely circumstantial case. There is no definitive evidence one way of the other on the question of whether Jesus was actually married to anyone.) ************ A note on Alatea's answer: Note that neither of the sources she sites have ever been considered official Church doctrine. The Orson Pratt quotes were him stating his personal beliefs. The Journal of Discourses has always been considered to be of the same level as the Apocrypha (useful for backing up other official sources, but not to be relied upon when it is the only source for a teaching). As I wrote above, some believed that Jesus was married, some even believed that he was a polygamist, but the Church's official stand is that His bride is the Church. One further note on this, so what if some do believe that Jesus was a polygamist? What we have here is an attempt to apply contemporary standards to an ancient society. In Jesus' day, polygamy was not uncommon nor was it against the laws of His society. So, what we have here is people trying to condemn us for possibly believing something that is entirely possible and would not have been condemned by Jesus' contemporaries. There is no hard evidence to support either side of the argument. The Bible and other histories are completely silent on the issue of whether Jesus was married. To condemn us for accepting the possibility of Jesus being a polygamist is to ignore the realities of the society in which Jesus lived.
  • Anonymous, and Glenn are both right. The church has not nor will they teach that Jesus was married. However, it can be found in the Naghamadi, (not sure of the spelling) library that Jesus was married to both Mary and Martha, and even Mary Magdalene, that is why the Jews killed him, for practicing Polygamy. The Church doctrine will only consist of doctrines that help bring about our Salvation and Exaltation in the celestial Kingdom. Anything else will not in any way effect our hoped for Exaltation...Later
