  • The blood that collects in a tampon while it is inside the vagina can serve as an incubator for bacteria. In the warm moist environment of the vagina, the blood provides nourishment for bacteria. When a foreign body like a tampon is left in the vagina for days, Staph aureus infections can occur. The longer a tampon is left inserted, the stronger a toxic bacteria strain can become, perhaps enabling it to overwhelm both the good bacteria in the vagina, and the blood stream's natural defenses, and these bacteria can multiply, especially in the presence of nutrient-rich blood, and release their toxins, causing Toxic Shock Syndrome. The symptoms of toxic shock syndrome include a high fever, a diffuse rash that can include peeling skin when more severe, feeling unwell, nausea, vomiting or diarrhea, fast heart rate, dizziness or fainting from low blood pressure, and confusion. If severe and not treated, this can progress to shock, organ damage or even death. Reference Links: www.sexualityandu.ca/eng/news/e-newsletter_1204.cfm www.the-clitoris.com/f_html/tampon.htm
  • As the previous answer stated toxic shock syndrome can cause death and who in their "right" mind would leave a tampon in for a month???
  • You will become seriously unwell and maybe even die.
  • Well, if you did, it would be a miracle if you didn't get what's known as TSS (Toxic Shock Syndrome). It is a very deadly disease. Tampons should not be left in for more than 4-8 hours. Anything more can be risky and even fatal.

  • Well, im not proud to say that i have accidently done this...fortunately i did not get toxic shock, however i did become quite sick before it was dscovered. I got a really bad bladder infection or UTI (i was unsure which one) but this is why i went to the dr. I was away at college (but not sexually active) however when i got to the health center, they assumed that i had some sort of STD because it was a health center at a college. I assured the dr that i hadnt been sexually active, and she just perscribed me antibiotics and told me to leave. I got really sick, both diahrea and vomitting, and had a terrible fever...not to mention the worst burning bladder infection. I went back to the dr. Then she said, well let look inside (im still convinced that she was looking for an STD) thats when she found THE TAMPON! so embarasssing, but i was so thankful...i began to feel better within hours! Its amazing how the body works! I hope this helps someone to be more aware of tampons left behind...everyone should feel in there at least once a month, especially if unsure (i know its gross, but when the dr pulled it out, she said that it was an all-too-common mistake)BE CAREFUL!
  • I just did it for the first time at 45 years old. Oh my, hope it's not early alzheimers! Well, it wasn't actually a month, at most it was a week, but I think more like about 4-5 days. I discovered it when I started bleeding and noticed a foul odor after sex. My husband and I were baffled and then I found the source. The blood was actually coming from the saturated tampon. It had turned sideways way back at the base of my cervix. I imagine I was well on my way to having a raging infection b/c the smell was the worst ever!! Hopefully I got it out in time. I'll be calling my OB-GYN doctor today to make sure that I don't need an antibiotic.
  • is the only way to have it removed (tampon) by the doctor? is there no other way to find out if you have left it inside. I cant remember if i took last tampon out. I have been using tampons for the last 22 years, i may just me over acting but cant really remember if I have left my tampon out, but i havent inserted another one yet.
  • How did you get it out when it was sideways? I started my period early then when i chaned my tampon there was this awful smell and then my husband and i had sex and it was the same smell.. But I couldnt feel anything bc i was starting to think i did the same thing..
  • Your friends start making up excuses for not going out with you. Flowers wilt and die when you walk by. Stray cats congregate under your window and howl.Short answer: You smell like hell. Sylfilthia Rottencrotch
