Contrary to the standard method of listing day/month/year as used in most of the world, the United States typically uses the month/day/year. In this case, the event occurred on September 11, 2001, thus 9/11/2001, simply shortened to 9/11.

Because the attack was in the US and here we use MM/DD/YYYY not DD/MM/YYYY format that Europe uses.
