Dish Network requires me to hook up a phone line to the DVR box or else they will charge me $5 extra per month. Is this how they spy on what I watch by accessing the harddrive via the phone line?

The receiver gets it's updates no matter if the land line is hooked in to it. The line is used for ppv's and to detect low signal strength, it also used to detect lnb drift but they do not use that as code anymore.

Yes it will run you $5 dollars a month per duo receiver, not because it's a dvr box, but keep in mind that while your paying the phone line charge, you will also be paying the leasing fee and the dvr fee, something the retailer or if you ordered from dish direct should of informed you about.

If you have our hd dvr duo receiver they now waive the phone fee on the 1st box.

Nowadays you never know what the government is up to. As far as the phone line, if your lnbf (eyeball) is going bad it sends a signal to the customer service center that a replacement is required, so they can setup an appointment to get that taken care of before you start experiencing any type of signal loss. The phone line is the easy way for your receiver to get its updates.

No, it's just for Pay Per View type stuff. Many people don't bother with the phone line, it pops up a warning but you bypass it and get on with your life, and they don't see the $5 charge.

Yes. I hacked my Tivo using a program called InstantCake and unhooked the line. It still gets the programming.

The phone line connected to the receiver has 2 purposes: 1) it sends us information on the health of your receiver. If problems are developing on the receiver, it will provide that information to us, 2) it allows you to order PPV movies and events with your remote control. You can accomplish the same activities with a broadband Internet connection also. We do not charge the $5 anymore. I hope this helps.
