A steamer uses moist heat an iron uses dry heat.

A steamer does teh same kind of job that hanging some clothes in the steamy shower with you does. It relaxes the wrinkles, like in your travel clothes. And may make them look rather nice. If you hold the bottom of the item tightly down, it helps to pull the wrinkles out better. But it really works best on draperies and clothes you wouldn't place an iron directly on. AN iron really shouldn't be used to 'iron', it should be used to press, it's weight, either hot and dry or with modern steam irons, hot and moist, directly on the clothes. I like a steamer for delicate things, and for hanging fabric like drapes but not for clothes. It really doesn't work very well. If you want only one, I'd go with a good steam iron. Most of them will do a bit of steaming when held upright and push a bottom, out comes the steam. The BEST irons are those that have a steam generator at the side and are plumbed to an iron and you have constant feed of steam. They are awesome, easy to use but very expensive. As a seamstress I have used one and they are a dream but most people can't justify the cost.
