Pass, no. But at a recent assembly I attended, they brought out nearly a dozen 3 ft x 2 ft boxes for donations and placed them at all exits of the building so that as people left they would be reminded to drop money into the box.

Isnt that a little more subtle then sticking a collection plate in your face with everyone there to see if and how much you donate?? Sometimes they even pass it around twice in churches. There work is supported by voluntary donations so of course they need funding. They do offer there literature at no charge after all.

Other churches have tithe envelopes with names and they take W2 forms and check income first.

No collection plates are ever passed, and you don't get to see how much someone donates. They have inconspicuous bins scattered throughout the rear of the hall, and often wooden boxes on stands, to put "donations". They occasionally do ask for pledge forms to be filled out, and if you try to opt out they will have you fill it out at the book study in front of the conductor (and any onlookers still present). And the assemblies have those cardboard bins at every row, usually in the front, and scattered in the corridors, along with implied guilt about giving more.

The Bible states categorically that the sacrificial death of Jesus, in 33 C.E., “blotted out,” or “abolished,” the Law and with it the “commandment to collect tithes.”—Colossians 2:13, 14; Ephesians 2:13-15; Hebrews 7:5, 18.

However, contributions to support true worship were still needed. Jesus had commissioned his disciples ‘to be witnesses to the most distant part of the earth.’ (Acts 1:8)

As the number of believers grew, so did the need for Christian teachers and overseers to visit and strengthen the congregations. Widows, orphans, and other needy ones had to be cared for at times.

How did the first-century Christians cover the costs involved?
About 55 C.E., an appeal went out to Gentile Christians in Europe and Asia Minor in behalf of the impoverished congregation in Judea. In his letters to the congregation in Corinth, the apostle Paul describes how this ‘collection for the holy ones’ was organized. (1 Corinthians 16:1)

You may be surprised at what Paul’s words reveal about Christian giving.
The apostle Paul did not cajole fellow believers to give. In fact, Macedonian Christians who were “under affliction” and in “deep poverty” had to ‘keep begging him with much entreaty for the privilege of kindly giving and for a share in the ministry destined for the holy ones.’—2 Corinthians 8:1-4.

True, Paul encouraged the more affluent Corinthians to imitate their generous brothers in Macedonia. Even so, observes one reference work, he ‘declined to issue directives, preferring rather to request, suggest, encourage, or appeal.

Spontaneity and warmth would be absent from the Corinthians’ giving if coercion were present.’ Paul knew that “God loves a cheerful giver,” not one who gives “grudgingly or under compulsion.”—2 Corinthians 9:7.
Abundant faith and knowledge together with genuine love for fellow Christians would have impelled the Corinthians to give spontaneously.—2 Corinthians 8:7, 8.

This is the example that Jehovah's Witnesses strive to follow today...World-wide.

NO..voluntary donations actually... you can donate or you may not,it depends on you if you want to give heartily.. those plates is where you will write the amount of your donation,,and if you don't have money, just don't write anything...the purpose of the plates is that the overseer can badget the expected donations of the members for the congregation expenses.
GOD will be happy when we give heartily.

being raised as a catholic, im sick of jw's always bagging us. they shouldnt jugde catholics for what they do or believe and just worry about their own religion. that to me shows how threatened they feel. catholics do pass a plate around during mass but you can put in as much or little as you want . we went to mass every week and my mother would often not put anything in as we could not afford it. we were never looked down upon or treated like outcasts for how much or how little we donated. get your facts right jws. im sick of them all thinking and acting like they are superior because they are "in the truth" are we all living a lie? I know many people who aren't jw's who do so much to help others and spread the word of the bible in so many ways yet jw's seem to make you feel like they are the only ones to be "saved" because they are the only ones knocking on doors speading the good news. they are the biggest hyopcrites of all time predicting the end of the world over and over in the past only to get it all wrong.
