How can you know if the water on a lake, reservoir, etc. is going to be too rough for kayaking before you leave home. For example, can you check the internet for the things that effect the lake, location of the moon, or anything.

You can always check NOAA's marine forecasts. They may include the body of water that you plan on going to if you're in the US. http://www.nws.noaa.gov/om/marine/home.htm

I know in Michigan all local forcasts include wave heights on the big lake. But a little experience should help you know that wind of a certain speed with make choppy water/waves. Moon phase has less to do with smaller lakes and resevoirs. It's usually wind speed and direction.
