Not even the Gloucester Township, of which Erial is a part, knows how Erial got its name. I emailed them, and this is what I got back:

"[We] just found a good readable 1840 map of Gloucester Township, and sorry to inform you that there is no "Erial" on that map. In fact there isn't much of anything past Blackwoodtown going towards Clementon. There was a large land holder in what is now Erial that owned 85 acres. In 1840 Gloucester Township was about 95 square miles and today it is about 24 square miles...Gloucester Township was incorporated as a township in 1695, Deptford Township was incorportaded in 1694, both part of Gloucester County.

Camden County split away from Old Gloucester County March 13, 1840 while Atlantic County already split had from Old Gloucester County in 1837. In 1840 Gloucester Township included the present unincorporated villages of Chews Landing which included present day Glendora), Mechanicsville (present day Blenheim), Blackwoodtown (present day Blackwood), and the present day towns and townships of Clementon, Somerdale, Laurel Springs, HiNella, Pine Hill, Pine Valley, Lindewold, Winslow Township, part of Magnolia, and Stradford. I think I named them all. For seven years starting in 1695 Gloucester Township went from the Delaware River all the way to the Atlantic Ocean before more townships were formed. Another early township of Old Gloucester Township was Egg Harbor Township located in present day Atlantic County."
