This happens when the game you are using is too much out-dated by your hardware. There are rare occassions where the hardware, the software or both of these factors have what we call "backwards compatibility issues". This happen generally because some software were developed without the capability to adapt to more advanced hardware in a system. In your case the game you are playing may have been created in a time where the current capacity of your hardware was yet to be considered as a factor or simply unimaginable. A good example are some really old programs which uses DOS systems and cannot run on more advance operating systems.
