In u.s. dollars, about 500-1,000 a month, will get you a maid and a semi-mansion. this sounds cheap, but watch out for the banditos. security will cost you more than the rent.

That depends on where you would like to live. Some parts of Mexico are as pricey as in the U.S. Mexico is a very big and diverse place.

I find it very sad that "americans" still think of Mexico as an underdeveloped, poor world that is far, far away from the US... Having said that, to answer your question, to live "like a king" in Mexico you'd need as much as you need in the US, since most of the every day articles that you use are priced pretty much the same... For instance, a litter of milk (about a quart) costs $1.00 US, a big mac, about $3.00 US, the rent of a small apartment in Mexico City, in a nice neighbourhood, could vary from $300 up to $1,000 US. On the other hand, to buy a house, a car, or to develop a small business, you'd need CASH, since credit is a much more expensive item here in Mexico than it is in the US. Now... If "living like a king" means doing nothing all day, not having to worry about anything, I've known people who do so with as little as $100 US a month, but live in poor conditions. Me, I earn about $2,000 US a month (about 24,000 a year), and I do not consider myself a king, but I manage to live "comfortably" in the "middle class", living in a two-story house and having dinner in a nice restaurant once in a while...

Keep in mind that after you live there, and if you get a job there you will not be making dollars, you will be making pesos.
