I've wondered about this a lot! I think the thing that most binds me to my friends is their openness -- the willingness to share themselves and allow me into their lives at a fairly deep level. Someone who cares enough to do that is also courageous enough to choose friendship, even when the price might be pain... inevitably, friends make mistakes, say the wrong thing, have fights, whatever. The friendships I've kept are those that have survived one or more of these incidents. When somebody still wants to play after that happens, and is willing to stay with the tough conversations until they're resolved, that's what brings out the real loyalty in me.

Our kids are best friends (and have been since they were little) However, if that were to ever change and it might eventually, we still share a odd sense of humor only we appriciate..lol..(we enjoy cooking together, eating and well drinking together..hehe) After 10 years I consider her the sister I never had..

Friendship. It is near impossible to pin it down more than that. Any specific rule you propose will inevitably have exceptions.
