I need to get my ex served with court papers. I do not presently have an attorney. Can i serve him myself when i see him? If not, can i get one of my friends to do it? And if so, does it matter that my friend is with me at the time? Will it still count?

Most jurisdictions don't allow a party to an action to serve the other party. However, in most jurisdictions, you can have any non-party over the age of 18 serve the person. The service will most likely be valid even if you are present, but you should avoid this because it could provoke your ex to dispute service. Also, the purpose of this rule is to avoid confrontations while being served. Thus, even if someone else is technically serving the person, your presence may provoke confrontation. -
