What Timothy Sullivan said is so very true. And so very sad. Another reason for Howard's departure is the FCC has been cracking down on the media recently (since the "wardrobe malfunction.") If something is found offensive, it's either cut or fined. However, this situation is still rather skewed (in my opinion.) If a citizen is offended by material that the FCC doesn't find offensive, nothing is done. Let's say, for example, that I found "Seventh Heaven" offensive because it's so preachy. A. I'd just change the channel to something I'd rather be watching. B. With A. notwithstanding, my complaint would be laughed at, because it's such a "good, wholesome show." You get the idea.
The thing that I found so odd about Howard getting yanked off the air was that, at least in KY, it was the highest rated program on the station (100.5 WTFX.)
Clear Channel suspended Howard Stern's radio show because they wanted to continue with their Responsible Broadcasting Initiative and finally said that "the show was vulgar and offensive to listeners." It seems to be that they finally had enough of all the vulgarity that was portrayed.
"The media company [San Antonio-based Clear Channel Communications Inc.] pulled the show in stations in six markets: two in Florida and stations in Rochester, N.Y., Louisville, Ky., San Diego and Pittsburgh."

Exactly! Ratings are an inverse indicator of how "offensive" a given show is to a majority of people, duh!
