Help answer this question below.
I use digital equipment for various needs, but for doing art I use mostly traditional media.
I consider myself as a free time artist.
I use a digital camera for photography, and documentation of my own artwork. I believe that anyone can be an artist--it simply means someone who creates art. And anyone can! It's a wonderful thing.
I think there are a two main groups of artists.. Those who make art as a hobby, and those who make art as their career[a pro artist]--the main difference between them is, the professional artist gets a salary for art-making [as it is their job] while the hobby artist usually recieves a salary from a non-art-related job, but may still get paid if doing commission work [as a side job or just for fun].
I do freehand illustration and painting. Often, I will scan the art into a photoshop file and manipulate it to get different effects. I also create art on the computer using graphics and photo programs. Having a computer doesn't make one an artist. Using a computer doesn't lessen the need for good design abilities. Creating art is creative! And it can be done in any way an artist wants!
I rely heavily on my iMac running Adobe CS4 and Canon EOS. Currently Im studying to become a graphics designer. Yes I do consider myself an artist. To me my Mac is a tool, a bit different, but same as canvas and paintbrushes are to others.
