  • Dont blame yourself, 14 years is a very old age for a dog! Especially if it was a pedigry! Just take your time and get over your loss
  • Don't blame yourself! I just lost my buddy a couple of months ago. It's hard, and it will hurt. You will question everything you have ever done to care for him. A toy poodle being 14 is old. He could have gotten into something, but it was likely old age. Was he slowing down, sleeping more, not interested in going for walks, indoor "mistakes"?
  • I want to add more... these are the incidents that happened! He is old, had cataract and could barely see well. Was 14, toy poodle. I gave him gram and rice, then evening gave him beef coz the restaurant gave me beef by mistake that I don't eat. I gave it to him. Oh Lord! Did that kill him? Was he unable to digest it? After eating this, my wife also gave him a very small piece of chicken bone the next day, not sharp the joint, was round! To add... He was already getting too old, always sleeping and eating and sleeping again... but dont know what we did wrong! When he started getting sick the next morning - these are all incidents that happened: I was at work, my wife called and said he is vomitting badly and having intensive watery diarrhea. She had already fed him by this time. Chicken boneless, plain with rice. Then, he continued to drain, I came home and we travelled so we could get to to the doc. Coz here the doc was almost 200 kms away, so I called the doc. By this time, he was already draining, vommiting and I saw white froth off his mouth. I told the doc, but my mistake I just said froth. I assumed or thought that froth and vomitting mean the same. This is where I skrewed it up. The doc said give him lots of water with sugar in it, he will get strength and cut his food. I did! He drank lot of sugar and we went home. I called the doc to go to him and he never ans the phone. I put thorough the nite watching him and gave him nothing, yes but malox earlier twice coz he vommited the first time. And then I gave him olive oil as the doctor said. But morning his toungue was all dryed, shrunk blue and his eyes dried. He was not moving, could feel his heartbeat. He had one seizure too that he pretty often used to get, but the doc had given something for that as well. But he was gone, his mouth was terribly dry and he started to bleed from his mouth when I picked him. I am shattered now! What did I do? Did I kill him, what could be the cause. I hate my doc, he is so selfish. Did my dog have Gastric Dilatation/Volvulus (Bloat) (GDV) or Parvo? I ask parvo coz I read and he had stayed in the hospital for two days before his death, almost 10 days back since he was attacked by a stray cat! But he was fine then, but I know I killed him. Did I ??? Please tell me, I want him to forgive me, please....
  • Thanks. But hope you read the rest of what happened. Maybe you will know what I did????
  • He was just Old and couldn't handle the stress. His immune system was probably down and spending time at the vet was probably where he got sick. It could have been a number of things Liver or Kidney Failure ETC ETC, Don't blame yourself!!! You didn't poison him and I am sure he was happy to live his very long life with you and die Peacfully in his own home rather than at the vets with strangers. He had a Long life. Sorry for your loss!!
  • I thank you call for your kind replies and respect that you put forward to my side. Considering the care and affection you all have for pets, please contact me anytime for any help I could offer from my side. Thanks again all and take care.
  • Kdrive, 14 is a very old age for a dog. It's most likely that no matter the casue of his death, it was coming on before there were any signs to alert you. You did everything you could have for your friend. The symptoms you describe probably couldn't have been treated in the time your dog had left. His body was failing and you gave him all the love and care you could. You did nothing wrong. Nothing would have kept your dog alive. You were lucky to have had him as long as you did and no doubt, judging by your guilt and grief, he enjoyed a tremendous amount of love. I feel your pain deeply. Give it time and the pain does get better. Find your peace knowing it was okay to let him go; it was painful but natural and you did all you could do.
  • was the froth white? sounds like what happened to my twelve year old dog. he suffered from a tortion. ( i think thats what it is called) where his stomach twisted.
  • If your dog was already 14, and was coughing-in my best guess: your doggie had Congestive Heart Failure or Pneumonia. With these conditions at that age, that often aren't treated, they can get a lowered immune system. These factors cause the dog to get diaherra and become dry, while drowning in their own fluid filled lungs. Actually, in my opinion, when the vet told you to give it sugar and oil-all it did was make the dog die faster by allowing more fluid in the body that accumulates. By all means, my diagnosis may be wrong and your doggie could have just had heart worms. But, the way you have explained yourself, I believe you would have been smart enough to get the dog checked for that a lot sooner than letting it age without a test. I have seen quite a few dogs with the same condition as you have described. MOST of them, while doing dentals on dogs. Allowing your pup to get a plaque build up and rotten teeth adds to the infection levels and mortality of you animal. Sorry to hear of your loss, I hope this gives you more of an answer to your recent questions.
  • Kdrive, what an awful experience for you. I'm really sorry. Being that his tongue was shrunken and blue... could he have been choking all along? I have seen this happen and it is horrifying. However, the dog did not bleed from the mouth after death. I agree with what others have said - the hospital stay, the food change and the attack from the cat are all major stresses for an aging dog. It could have just been his time. If I were you, and you want to make peace with the situation, you could get a necropsy done on his body. It also concerns me that he was attacked by a cat. I wonder if the cat had something? It does not sound like parvo from what you've described. Please don't blame yourself. 14 years old is a great age. So sorry about your loss. :(
  • i am sorry for your loss i know just how you feel my beloved cocker died on labor day after months battling a terrible cough. and no you didnt kill your dog.. i blame myself everyday. saying i should have taken him to just 1 more doctor but, i know it would have made no diff.. be glad your dog went pretty fast my poor baby was sick since january. vets kept saying he would be ok
  • No you didn't kill him. I don't want to sound harsh here, but when we decide to have a dog we have got to realise that it will die before we do and if their eventual death is going to make us melodramatic we shouldn't have dogs. By all means cry and be upset - I always have, but don't be a drama queen about it.
  • k drive,do not feel guilty maybe this will help.... The Rainbow Bridge There is a bridge connecting Heaven & Earth. It is called the Rainbow Bridge because of its colors. Just this side of the Rainbow Bridge there is a land of meadows, hills and valleys with lush green grass. When a beloved pet dies, the pet goes to this place. There is always food and water and warm spring weather. The old and frail animals are young again. Those who are maimed are made whole. They play together all day. There is only one thing missing: They are not with their special person who loved them on Earth. Each day they run and play until the day comes when one suddenly stops playing and looks up! The nose twitches! The ears are up! The eyes are staring! And this one suddenly runs from the group. You have been seen, and when you and your special friend meet, you take him or her in your arms and embrace. Your face is kissed again and again, and you look once more into the eyes of your trusting friend. Then you cross the Rainbow Bridge together, never again to be separated.
  • Vomit, with froth, is, of course, often a symptom of Parvo. And although historically, Parvo has mainly affected puppies, the latest 2c strain is also infecting and killing fully-vaccinated adult dogs too. This 2c strain can actually kill a dog within six hours of symptoms first appearing - several of our customers have had their dogs die within one day of noticing anything amiss. However, as many others have pointed out, at 14 years old, there could be any number of things that could have caused him to die.
  • My moms dog was 14yrs also, just had put to sleep, he was also coughing alot.... and his trachea had collapsed, and the bones around where brittle, and his heart was enlarged , which was making him cough, and would not get better due to his age, and only high sedatives would work, which would only make dog like a zombie, and keep coughing at a low, but wouldnt fix the problem at all.... eventually he would of coughed him self to death... sorry to hear about your dog..:(
  • Please don't blame yourself. 14 years for a poodle is a good long life. I suspect it is coincidence that you fed it something at the same time he became ill. Don't beat yourself up.
