"Man is not good, by nature." SELFISH If we are lucky...we learn to be generous.

Both are innate characteristics, and we can learn to grow either one.

I would say that both traits are innate in human nature, however selfishness is more predominant. Most young children that you meet are self-centered, and it requires their parents teaching them not to be to instill a sense of generosity. Selfishness is not a bad thing, however. After all, we must, at times, be selfish in order to survive. After all, if we never take any food for ourselves, or never find a mate, the species would die out.
