How and why did the Public School System get started exactly? Who were the people that started it and what was their purpose behind it?

This is one of those absolutely Brilliant and excellent Q's you only see on these Q & A boards once in a very 'blue moon'! I can't answer it, but I'm sure we would all be very interested to learn the correct answer. If it hadn't already started there in the US - before his time, would it be something someone like Ben Franklin might achieve?? I think they took their leads from the Motherland and past Jewish practices, even. I know most of these religious-based communities had teachers and Rabbis to teach the young boys about their own histories and religious practices. Back in Jesus' time, for instance, the 12 year-old boys used to get taught by the rabbis for half a day, i believe it was. From there, or Before that time, i have no idea.

There is no single Public School System. Each State, and many local areas have their own system. PBS published an entire four program mini-series discussing Schools in America.
