How come my new 8mm Sony Handycam will not play my 8mm tapes recorded with my old 8mm Sharp camera?

    Because they are two different manufactures and the tracking signals are on oposite ends of the tape, that is the signal on the Sony is recorded at the bottom of the tape where as the signal for the Sharp is recorded at the top.

    8mm cassettes are used with both analog and digital cameras. If your old camera was analog (e.g., Hi-8) and the new one is digital (e.g., Digital-8), the tapes are physically compatible, but are electronically incompatible because they are in different video formats.

    If both cameras are analog Hi-8, the problem may be caused by differences in tracking between the two cameras. Either the new camera is out of spec or, more likely, the old camera went out of spec before the tapes were recorded. Check the tapes on another analog Hi-8 camera or VCR and, if the problem persists, it suggests a problem with the older camera.
