Yes, at times they are a preferred alternative.

I consider "western medicine" to be alternative-since it had developed so many hundreds of years later than what we have come to call "alternative" and yes, I think it works ;)

Some does, and some does not. You cannot just say that all work or that all don't. It depends on the medicine being discussed.
