I always took cereal. I love cereal for breakfast lunch or dinner. My school sold milk so I would bring cereal and a bowl. everyone laughed at first but the idea caught on and almost everyone brought cereal at least once.

How about 3 small bags. One with pretzels, one with fruit and one with money for whatever looks good to drink...

Back in my day... (heh heh).. Seriously, I had a bologna (baloney) sandwich and a banana every single school day for as long as I can remember.

Invest in some disposable containers medium-sized and small. Then the night before, saute chicken breast strips or cut into small nuggets and salt & pepper. Use the medium sized container for romain and the small container for dressing. You can put the chicken into a small ziplock bag and another small bag with croutons and parmesan cheese. At lunch time, mix it together for an awesome Ceasar Salad! Yummy! Also, make yourself a nice fruit salad and place in the medium container, then vanilla yogurt in the small container (or small sized yogurt) and use the yogurt as a dip for the fruit! I love it! You may also want to invest in a small thermal lunchbox. My husband loves his!

First, learn to cook for yourself (it's fun, and will give you a life time skill). Pasta salads, green salads, hand full of nuts. The beauty of pasta salads and green salads is that you can make so many variations. Pasta with brocolli and vinegar/olive oil, some bell pepper, let it marinade overnight. .Try it with kalamata olives sometimes, instead of brocolli try shredded carrots! So many variations that you can make a day to three in advance. Green salads, same way.

I hear you! Some days I used to take a small thermos with soup in (heated up in the morning in the microwave at home and a roll. The soup was always a perfect temperature by lunchtime and took same time to prepare as making a sandwich in the morning. Other days a pasta salad is good you can prepare enough for a couple of days in the evening (doesn't need to be eaten hot). The occasional sandwich doesn't seem so bad when you space them out with the odd soup or salad. Have you tried making wraps instead of sandwiches? From flour tortillas? They weren't really around when I was at school but are a popular alternative for bringing into work these days.
