If you are playing by BCA rules and are playing a 'call-shot' game, you only need to call your ball and your pocket. As long as you strike one of your balls first and the ball you called goes into the pocket you called, it is a legal shot. http://www.bca-pool.com/play/tournaments/rules/rls_gen.shtml http://www.bca-pool.com/play/tournaments/rules/rls_8bl.shtml

You can never use the eight ball in a combination shot

If you hit one of your balls first, and the 3-ball falls into it's designated pocket, it doesn't matter if it hits every other ball on the table and rolls down the top of the cushion. The requirements of the shot are: player must first contact their own 'suit' of balls first with the cue ball and called ball must be pocketed in called pocket. Beyond that, all other contact is incidental (doesn't matter). In many bars they say you can't bounce anything off of the 8-ball. It is a tactic of lesser players to block the pocket with the 8 so that you can't use that pocket. The shot you describe is called a carom: bouncing your object ball off of another ball to redirect the first ball into a pocket.
