First try to relax. Practice dancing at home. Turn on some music you like, stand in front of the mirror and try to move with the music.
Watch people dance on TV and mimic their movements. Once you can mimic try adding variations of your own.
Eventually a style will develop. It's not hard. You may just be nervous.
Get drunk and you'll be able to dance all night long and not give a stuff how. Or, dance next to any man - most of them do seem to have a worse problem than you.
I LOVE to dance, but my husband is very self-conscious on the dance floor and just gets so nervous. He actually admitted that he enjoys letting loose, but just can't do it in certain situations, so every now and then we just go for an overnight somewhere that's far enough away that he feels a little more anonymous(I guess?) and just dance the night away... He just goes crazy out there!! It's a lot of fun to see him let go like that!
Also, we did take swing lessons once, where given the instruction, he was great, in fact, I was the one who got nervous! LOL! Still, we had a wonderful time. We never practice, so we've forgotten most of what we learned, but every now and then we cut a rug in the living room and the kids cheer us on :)
My suggestion is to join a group, or take some dance lessons. You'll have fun and most likely meet some new people! Also, some clubs (like salsa dance clubs) have instructional hours early in the evenings. This is a really fun way to learn and enjoy a long night out!!
Good luck to you! and have fun!!
I dance like Im hemriging so I just get out and do my best napolian Dynamite, folks say stuff but I act like I cant here em.
I always feel uninhibited after I've a few drinks. I won't even get out on the dance floor unless I have had a few. That's only if you are of drinking age! :)
Find some music you like, and just listen to it, and nod your head to the beat. Then start stepping side to side to the beat and clapping. Or tap your foot. Then improvise. Do a mad air guitar to rock music, to dance music, jump up and down and move your head about. To heavy metal, do a bit of mad headbanging. You get the idea. Just get up there, relax, let go, and have fun!
Relaxation and enjoyment are the key to being able to dance.
Just relax your body and feel the music. At home is best then you can practise all you want.
Everyone can dance it is just allowing yourself to enjoy the movement and feel of your body.

If you have a person you trust to dance with, it matters a lot less because
a. you can follow until you learn to lead.
b. your with someone special.
I suppose my answer is limited to the old concept of slow dance, but most of what I learned was at my mom's office Christmas parties as a teen; the older ladies and retirees loved having this young guy as a partner, and I was exposed to dancing in a different way than is most likely taught today.
If you are not comfortable dancing, don't dance. You can go to a school dance or dance club just for the social interaction. If you really want to dance, but can't it, try some dance lessons. It could help boost your confidence as well as teach you to dance.
