Ok, heres the scoop. You are told about three weeks to a month before you should change it... This is because a good piercing shop will expect you to go to the mall and get crappy jewelry made out of crappy material which is less sanitary, and less reactive. If you purchase really good jewelry, from nice respectable piercing shops (not like spencers at the mall) if you feel comfortable doing so, you could do it in about a week and a half or two weeks

When the swelling has been gone for several days, go to your piercer and have them change it. They can autoclave it, so you don't have to worry.

Didn't your piercer give you any info on aftercare? If he/she did, follow it. If not, they should have. Make sure you rinse with a mouthwash (or salt spray) after eating, smoking or drinking anything for a month straight. Then you could talk to your piercer about changing it.
