Always more expensive. The airlines know they have you as a captive passenger if you need the flight and can charge what the market will bear. It gets back to supply and demand. I have only done it once before because a cruise was on the line. Otherwise, I would have declined to pay almost triple the normal price.

They are far more expensive when buying a airline ticket at the last minute. Always buy a ticket in advance.
