If a lot of blood is lost, how does the body produce 'new' blood?

Your bone marrow produces your blood cells, so I assume thats how your body regenerates blood, but in the case of losing A LOT of blood, then I'm pretty sure you'd need a transfusion to replenish your blood. I don't think your body could make it fast enough to keep you from going into shock, or bleeding to death.
