According to wikipedia.com, the Dalmatian's use as a firehouse dog started with the popular use of the Dalmatian as a carriage dog (that is, a dog whose role was to run beside horse-drawn carriages). Carriage dogs were used to clear the way in front of the carriage, to help control the horses when at a full run (such as for horse-drawn fire engines), and to make an impression (dalmations being an attractive and eye-catching breed).
