    Once is enough.

Hard enough for the button to stop

Quickly enough before the opposing lights turn green.

Just once, softly or not in order to send off the integrated traffic light signal.

I find that a minimum of 12 times is necessary, and very quickly, otherwise, it forgets the first pushes. Also, if it's raining or snowing, you have to push an extra 5 times. At night, an extra 7 times. Just hard enough for the little light above the button to come on - I know it is hard to see in the bright daylight, but shove your face right into it and you will see it.

These buttons are made by the same folks who make the 'Close Door' buttons for elevators, so there you go!!
