  • I know almost nothing of piercings, but I would suggest taking the piercing out before doing anything else.
  • Perhaps he can find a good bone to replace the stud... Sorry I couldn't resist... LOL :-)
  • How long has it been and how swollen? If it's only pink and slightly swollen, that is a normal part of the process. Just irrigate it and keep it clean. Don't remove the stud as that will just irritate the "wound" and be hard/impossible to reinsert. If the stud is sinking in deep or it's been more than about three days then it's probably infected. You have to keep those things CLEAN and use sterile tools to insert a clean stud. Many places don't use an autoclave and/or don't use CLEAN tools and I've seen one place use "recycled" jewelry.
  • Remove the stud, see a doctor asap.
  • How long ago did he get this done? Also, is he keeping it clean with mild soap and water as well as doing sea salt rinses 6 times a day? That's what will help ease the swelling and help it heal quicker. I would first contact his piercer immediately, get advice there...doctors are quick to just take out the piercing which can be more detrimental and promote quick scar growth which is horrible. If the piercer is decent and knows his/her stuff, they'll tell you the exact course of treatment!
