There is no legal or rules-based reason that they could not. However, football is a game that requires large amounts of upper-body strength and explosive "fast-twitch" musculature. Given than men tend to have more of these traits than women and that professional sports tends to select those who are very statistically unusual, it is unlikely that we will ever see a woman who is enough of a statistical oddity that she would have the physical attributes necessary to play in the NFL. (Note: I think in certain specialized positions (e.g. punter or kicker), it's more likely that we could see a woman compete professionally.

I don't see why not. As long as they are ready to get judged on the same standards that the men are and are willing to get hit as hard as a man gets hit then all the more power to them. I suppose an ex soccer player might be adept at a kicking position. Other than that, I see little opportunity but I have seen some women who are bruisers and may find a calling on the gridiron.
