One of the differences is the size of the holes in the waffle. Belgian waffles are larger or thicker with bigger holes. And real Belgian waffles are raised with yeast batter and not a baking powder batter. I'm Belgian, I've got waffles, beer and chocolate running through my veins:-)

A Belgian waffle is prepared from a yeast-leavened batter. Most common topping is confectioner's sugar. In the United States, the batter is leavened with baking powder. They are generally denser and thinner than the Belgian waffle. In the US we most commonly top it maple syrup.
