• Given that you are from NY you have a rough idea of the weather where I live (South-western NH) though the worst of it tends to hit the northern end of Cheshire County. Google Alstead, NH and you can see how bad it CAN get.
  What is the longest you have been trapped in your house without access to a road, let alone a store? Could you call for help when that happened? Did you have heat?

• We were without power after a bad ice storm for 17 days. My son was only 4, and he and I were all alone with no access to roads (trees and wires blocking streets.) My car was totaled because a large tree fell on it.
  
  We made it 6 days, and it was rough. I planned for the dark as much as I could during the light of day. I had a gas stove and a fireplace, so I was able to cook, and had a well-stocked pantry.
  
  After 6 days, my parents were able to get through to pick us up, and took us to stay with my grandparents. That would help them as well. They didn't have electricity, but they had steam heat.
  
  We went back on day 12, and made through til day 17.

• I can put most vehicles through six inches of mud, snow over it's hood, or across wet, glare ice. Even under normal circumstances you gotta consider that I live in a town of less than 1000 people. My entire county has less than 74,000. I drive almost half an hour to get to work, or to any store with a decent inventory (as opposed to an over-priced family-owned general store/post office/gas station).

• I try to be. Our winters are pretty harsh, but that was the worst storm I've ever been through. I've never been to New Hampshire, but I'd like to go there and also to Vermont and Maine sometime soon. My husband and I are going to Cape Cod for the first time ever near the end of the month.
