I get those too, drink lots of water and it should help.
-
Some times if you wear the same shoes (like work shoes)every day that can cause it!
-
I get them if I am low on calcium and magnesium.

Yes, water will help. I used to get them, and if I don't drink plenty of water, and have strenuous exercise, I get woken up with them. The average person should consume 10, 8oz glasses of water everyday. If that's too much for you, just do the best you can. If you need something with flavor, try sugarfree drink mixes. Nothing with caffine, though, as this could have opposite of the desired effect.

I know that you won't believe this, but it really worked for me. Get a bar of soap (one that you aren't going to need for the shower right away). Put the bar under the fitted sheet of your bed around where your knees are when you lay down. Go to sleep as normal, but with the bar of soap in place. That's it - it worked for me.

My doctor told me to eat a banana and yogurt daily. I don't wake up with charily horses any more.

I've heard that not getting enough sodium will cause them.

i suffered horribly a few weeks ago i was getting them in the calf and front at the same time so no way to stretch one without contracting the other side worse. i had a complete electrolyte imbalance. i would let the dr do a blood test to be sure... otherwise a banana a day or quinine should help. + 5

Muscle cramps can originate from several causes the most common being hydration and salt balance. If you are very active and sweat you are excreeting moisture & salts. To compensate drink plenty of fluids and sources of sodium. In the old days salt tablets were used but today hydration fluids such as Gatoraide or te like suffice better. But if this has been happening for a long time and these remmedies don't work .. do see a doctor.

I have had this problem intermittently. When it was really severe and every night I went to the doctor. Lab tests showed I was very low on potassium. At the time my doctor prescribed potassium chloride 25 mEq. It is a small packet of powder to be mixed with water or juice. That seemed to help it. Now I just eat a banana a day! Good Luck! :-) +5

Some good answers here...exercise, potassium, calcium, vit. D...for some reason the soap helps too or so my mum reports. Diet and exercise!
