  • Pluck it, maybe it will lose some weight.
  • Sounds like it might be egg bound ie an egg is stuck inside. Get it to a vet straight away, or it will die.
  • I was also going to suggest that she may be egg-bound. Whenever I have seen it, an egg has broken inside just prior to being laid, so the shell is hard and brittle. I have seen an old farmer successfully remove the broken shell fragments from a hen, but I wouldn't want to try it. It shouldn't require massive surgery, but I would also say a vet is what you need right now. And fast.
  • Sounds like it's blocked! Try scaring it! If that dosen't work, get it moving and chase it around the yard. Then still not, two choices, vet or ring its neck. You may need to trade it in, for a new one. Small chickens are quite cheep!!
  • Sounds like your chicken is egg-bound. What you can do is dip your finger in some mineral oil or Vaseline and stick your finger up her vent. If you feel an egg with the tip of your finger than apply some more mineral oil to the egg itself with the tip of your finger and see if you can help it come out. You can very gently press and rub her abdomen and sides to try to ease it out but do not force it. If you have to break the egg, then be very careful removing the shells as it can hurt her vent. And when you are done removing the egg, wipe the whole area with Hydrogen peroxide. TO help the hen release or lower the egg so you can reach it, you could place her in a sink filled with warm water. Just hold her there for maybe 5 minutes. This often will get the egg moving on it's own. If neither of these things works for her, then take her to the vet.
