First off, I think the "fashion police" should have waited until the end of an inning or a pitcher swap-out to make the uniform check.
That being said, I think the rule isn't just about team spirit, but also about professionalism. Francona was wearing the Boston pull-over; but just like uniform requirements at the office, the current MLB Commissioner wants his "employees" being professional in appearance and that includes wearing the proper uniform for the job.
Francona should take the slap on the wrist (like he is doing now) and move on.
