Since all oceans are connected, what defines a separate ocean? (In other words, what makes the Indian Ocean a separate ocean and not part of the Pacific, etc.)

I am guessing the latitude and longitude coordinates. Just like Europe and Asia are connected and so is Africa and the Middle east.

The same thing that 'defines' the difference between the continents. We do. this may sound sarcastic (OK, it kind of is), BUT a similar example to your question would be "What defines a continent" while looking at Europe and Asia. I've never really understood exactly how we could call what is obviously a single land mass to be two continents. Anyway, the real answer to your question is a matter of division of bodies by land masses and probably also lattitude and ocean currents. Just a guess on the last part.

This is mainly defined by the arrangement of the continents such that they "divide" the world ocean into separate sections.
