Sometimes, it is due to a mental illness, other times, it is an insecurity and fear within themselves, they cant control their own lives, so they try to control other people or things.
I think that they are terribly insecure and have to control everything around them so that they don't lose total control of themselves.
Not wanting to accept other's ideas.

There are several attributes to this type of personality. First one that comes to mind is wanting things to be their way or perfect all the times, then you have fear, insecurities, lack of self-confidence.
Control monsters usually feel their internal world is out of control. Do they chuck a hissy fit when things do not go to plan? If they do, then its about power and control cause they have no grasp of their own emotional turmoil.

Feeling like you have to control of everything and everyone around you or you start feeling out of control. I think this type of person can't handle stress of any kind and resort to holding things more tightly than they should.
Someone who thrives on the power of controlling other people and the things around them to benefit themselves. These people probably think they know what's best for everyone as well, even if they actually don't.
Perhaps they like to manipulate their surroundings to benefit themselves.
I think because there afraid something wont be done right and they just want everything to be perfect. Im kind of a little control freak myself =
