  • No. In fact, just the opposite. Long-term, indigenous cultures will be assimilated by the larger culture. Therefore, the culture itself will eventually cease to exist. Indeed, they survive now. However, to be part of the trend towards greater living standards, yes. They have to economically participate with other cultures. When this happens, assimilation begins.
  • No, that will ensure there elimination.
  • As much as I enjoy the many different cultures that make up the human family, I can't help but feeling that one day we'll all be one boring, homogeneous group. Assimilation is inevitable I think. Kind of like when you're dealing with the Borg.
  • Eventually, yes, but by doing so they contribute to mainstream society and help shape it. While US culture is mostly based on the English and other European civilizations, we have been shaped to a huge degree by African cultures, Asian cultures, and Native Americans.
  • Yes. but I think mainstream society needs to respect and honor indigenous peoples and cultures for their contributions. The late Joseph Campbell spoke about an "I-Thou" relationship with life and nature versus the modern "Us-Them".
  • Physically, yes. With the growing rates of deadly illnesses and even simple ones we take for granted, an entire civilization could die quickly of the super flu or a simple epidemic of polio. However, it's necessary that we keep the culture intact.
