I don't know about bananas, but a potato will definitely plug up the tailpipe and interfere with the engine's aspiration, causing intermittent operation only. By not allowing exhaust gases to escape, combustion is hampered. I suspect that bananas might be used to cause the same effect but that the natural oil in bananas would not lodge them sufficiently to replace in place when pressure increases significantly - I could be wrong.
unfortunately not, theres a show called mythbusters and they tested this theory and it proved wrong, they also tried putting a potatoe in it and it just shot out at high speeds

You're reading Will a banana in your car exhaust really cause it to stall?

Regarding Agent1337's response, a potato worked when I jammed it in a bad neighbor's car really well and it wasn't readily dislodged, but he does confirm my suspicions about bananas. I might have gotten lucky due to the car's older engine.
