Johann Baptist Metz, The Emergent Church: The Future of Christianity in a Postbourgeois World, trans. by Peter Mann (New York: Crossroad, 1981). This is the first mention of the term that I can remember in an actual published book over 25 years ago.

According to this site the term was first used around 1997, however, the movement began in the mid 1980's.
