Some might, but most don't. It does not matter what area of thought we discuss be it religion, economics, what have you, there will always be extremists. Condemnation of such works of literature as the Lord of the Rings and the Harry Potter series because they involve magic fall into this category in my opinion. These are both classic tales of good verses evil. These stories don't present magic as being either. Rather, they present magic as being a "tool" used by both sides in the conflict. What makes it good or evil are the uses to which the opposing characters put it. This is analogous to things that we find in the real world. God created the world and everything that is in it, the rocks, the plants, the animals, the chemicals, the air, and the oceans. In and of themselves, I don't really consider any of these things to be good or evil. They are morally neutral. We make them good or evil based on the uses to which we put them. For example, water is essential for life. None of use could live very long with out it. However, it can also be the instrument of murder as it can be used to forcibly drown someone or as a medium to poison the victim. In one case, water is used to sustain life; in the other it is used to take it. So it is with the fantasy genera of literature. The magic in these stories is just a vehicle to further the plot. What is important to me is the underlying motivations of the characters. In both of the series cited, the heros are acting for selfless reasons. They are not in it for the glory or riches or personal power, they are acting to protect others from enslavement by the villain. Is this not the type of motivation that Jesus taught that we should have in our own lives? So, I don't consider the use of magic in a story to be a sign of the satanic. To get narrowly focused on a single element of a story like this is to strain at gnats while trying to swallow a camel. What is important in the story is not a single element, but rather the overall message. Does the story promote good values and behavior or does it promote the opposite? Does it glorify good or evil?

Why would we believe that? I'm obsedded with Harry Potter. Even my bishop and his family read. Heck, even the stake president reads it!

Most Mormons I know including Myself love the books.
-
That was teaching when I was a kid, but I don't how the church views it now.
-
No. Some mormons might, but the church has made no comment on the matter.
-
Ummm, just becuase some mormons dont like Harry Potter doesnt mean we all dont, T ake me for example, I am obsessed with it!!!
-
NO! I am Mormon, and magic is one of the most fun things to read about. And, BTW, there are tons of spiritual metaphors in there if you're really into scripture. I have heard paralells with both of those books and scripture brought up in church talks, lessons... It's pretty funny. How anyone could think that such harmless entertainments could turn you to the devil is preposterous, and I have no patience with such individuals. Now, the Golden Compass, some people do have issues with. Because of the whole anti-god thing so blatantly put in there. I read the books, I saw the movie. We're not crazy, honestly.
