SACD is an audio-only format. I have listened to SACD on audiophile players, but not on inexpensive hybrid DVD/SACD players. SACD and DVD-Audio have the potential for tremendous sound quality. However, as with any other audio source component, what you get is a reflection of how much is put into the player by the manufacturer and the price you are willing to pay. I have not been overly impressed with the playback quality of CDs on most DVD players I have heard. They don't seem to put as much effort into achieving good sound as they do on the number of formats they can play (quantity over quality). Inexpensive DVD players do not handle audio as well as good mid-fi CD players did ten years ago. SACD and DVD-A start out with an advantage, as they are both high-resolution audio formats. It is harder to degrade their sound quality than it is to degrade that of a CD, something that is not that difficult to accomplish. On the other hand, even the cheapest DVD/SACD players cost substantially more than $50 DVD nasties - and they perform far better in every way. You can spend as much as you like for an SACD player. For example, the Linn Unidisk 1.1 universal player handles DVD, SACD, and DVD-A, and retails for well over US$10,000. Unbelievable sound and video quality, but only a few people can afford that kind of outlay. Good SACD players start at under US$1,000 and by the time you hit US$2,000 you are into audiophile territory. If you have a quality audio system, SACD can certainly add a new dimension to your listening. SACD players are available in 2-channel and 6-channel versions. Most 6-channel players will allow you to fold the six channels down to two for stereo playback, since not everyone wants surround sound. There are also several SACD players on the market that are audio only (as was the original Sony SACD player). Unfortunately for audio buffs, almost all DVD-A titles need a video display to navigate their menus. BTW, most SACD titles are released on hybrid disks that have both an SACD and a CD layer. If you buy hybrid disks, you can begin building an SACD collection before you buy the player.
