How do you get Windows Update to automatically let you know of new updates so you can decide when you want to manually update the computer?

    Right-click on "MY COMPUTER" and select PROPERTIES.

    Select the "AUTOMATIC UPDATES" tab.

    From here you can choose one of these options -

    1. Automatic - this means Windows will download and install recommended updates for you automatically. Not good if you are on a slow connection.

    2. Download updates for me... - this means Windows will download any recommended updates and then prompt you if you want to install them.

    3. Notify me... - this means that Windows will tell you when updates are available but won't actually download them or install them without your say-so.

    4. Turn off Automatic Updates - Windows won't do anything automatically and you will have to visit the WindowsUpdate page yourself every once in a while.


    Given you question I susped you want option 2 or 3.
