Because the amount of stuff on your computer varies. If you were to run a virus scan, and then run it again immediately afterwards, without running anything else in the background that would affect results, you'd get the same number of objects scanned both times. But nobody really does that. Keep in mind that some document files are virus-prone objects that need to be scanned, as are some of the temporary files downloaded when you surf the web. Also, a virus scanner checks everything that is loaded in the computer's memory, since viruses generally try to load themselves so that they can do their nasty business. So if you do anything at all on your computer, it will affect the count of objects need to be scanned.
