This is a question that should be addressed to a professional. There are medications, exercise (like walking, swimming laps or running) Try to involve yourself in the problems of others, like disabled children, the homeless, or tutoring children and so forth. Taking you mind away from yourself is very helpful, although hard to do. See a professional -- and yes, recovery is possible.

I suffer from Major Biological Depression. I was diagnosed at 16 and at 31 I still struggle but my life is wonderful. Face it head on. Get some help. I've been going to a therapist for the last 10 years and my quality of life has improved. I did not take any maedication but there are many wonderful medications out there today. It may be hard but it is not impossible. You can do it. Even though I am happily married to a wonderful man, I still find that trusting friends and making friends are still a challenge but again not impossible. Good Luck.
