  • I only know a few so I hope someone can add to this. some of the indications for me is mushrooms growing at the base of the trunk indicates root decay. ofcourse large decay pockets or splits. if you look at the trunk flare most of the base will look normal and one side will be staight with no flare indicating anchor root damage or atrophy. if you see sap running from the bark or crotch it might be gumosis. it will draw bees . if you see a high bark ridge in a crotch inspect it for splits. healthy crotches look more like U shape than a V the V's can grow against eachother and push eachother till the tree splits. if it is over a house or critical target you might consider bracing or removal. another is a girdiling anchor root that might be found on a tree that is close to the foundation of a house . the root is actually wraped around the tree choking it . and not anchoring the side of the tree it is intended to anchor. you can cut the girdle root and try to save the tree. if the tree is small enogh and hasnt already started to lean.
