If you take a toxic substance orally, sometimes they recommend you throw it up and othertimes not. Under what circumstances do they recommend that you leave the toxic substance in the body?

• Yup. Anything that can do more damage coming back up should generally be dealt with without vomitting.

• There are ways to evacuate such material in a manner that is not dangerous.. Such as pumping the stomach. That usually involves a tube place down the throat and into the stomach where then they administer what they call activated charcoal, and that will cause you to expel the substance with out further damage. The charcoal absorbs the corrosive materials and leaves them safe to vomit up or sometimes they have you vomit through the tube. It's not a pleasant experience either since they usually perform this procedure while the patient is awake, and it can be very uncomfortable and the patients are usually already agitated.
