  • I think it is still a taboo subject in the eyes of the educators, it's almost as though they are trying to sweep it under the carpet in the hope that if they dont know about it they wont be it!!
  • I suspect because the reality of gender issues is a subject that a substantial portion of the country is not ready to acknowledge. You are well aware of the vocal Christian Right which seems to feel it has a corner on truth. While theyr'e often out in left field, they have a strong enough voice to get religion inserted into some text books. It is unfortunate that our society hasn't acknowledged reality when it comes to things such as sexual orientation, sexual mores and a host of other matters. My only suggestion is to confront these systems and force them to define with infinite detail what it is they fear. The reality is that emotional responses to others mere existence or life style is absolutely immature, whether it is because of color, ethnicity or sexual orientation. Or anything else, for that matter.
  • The schools are often run by backward thinking people (at least in the mid-west, although this seems to be a trait that involves 99% of this part of america). The schools don't want to discuss it, the teachers don't want to see it, and the students are never punished for anti-gay/anti-lesbian talk (though I would be against this, the first amendment protects all speech, however if I can get in trouble for saying something racist than that protection should be extended to all others)
  • It depends on the geographical location and the demographics. I moved from Atlanta, GA (where Gay Straight Alliance IF existed was very hush, hush) to Vermonth, where not only are the alliances not hush, hush, they are a very prevelane club in the schools. I think people/schools/everybody, need to open up their minds more and learn that everybody is not the same and that this is a necessity in the schools
  • it's continued discrimination against the homosexual community.
  • I am not sure. The schools around here seem to be supporting them (unless they're religious schools). There's one at my school..
