Good question. I believe it the same motivation that causes war. As humans we need to belong to a group and that means that that group is special and the other group less special or inferior. It does not seem to make any difference weather it is sports, religion or social status, In short us humans are a nasty species prove my point === we are killing the vary planet we live on. The species is flawed. BEAM ME UP SCOTTY.

These are generally very immature and, possibly, insecure people who feel a deep need to be part of some larger group, even if it is a synthetic grouping (e.g., favouring a sports team). Their need to be a part of and to identify with the group(s) causes them to act agressively towards people who they feel threaten the group or their membership in it. Since people often identify with sports organizations living elsewhere, this is quite distinct from local tribalism (i.e., the home team is one of us).

It's probably like gangs, they want to belong to a group. Those who do so are no real "fans". I have heard of hooligans destroyign for their team, and the team has to play it's next home games without any spectators or on neutral ground in a city far away as a "punishment" for having bad fans. I feel sorry for the players.
