It's a bald faced lie a bunch of hystirical Christians who can't stand the thought of their children learning any thing out of Bible School have come up with to not only defame her, but my religion as well. The stuff she writes about is pure fiction and any kid over the age of four has the capability to understand that. It also has nothing to do with Satanism or Paganism at all. And most children wouldn't even know to connect the three unless some idiot parent taught it to them.

    An Educated Optimist

    Note: I am a Christian.

That said, many Christians are concerned about the use of witchcraft in Harry Potter. I believe that if parents do not want their kids to be interested in witchcraft, they should speak to them about their beliefs rather than forbidding books that mention it. However, I don't even think this issue applies to Harry Potter, as the witchcraft discussed in the book doesn't look or sound anything like any version of Wicca that I know. Anybody who has read Harry Potter can attest that the book is not about a religion (which Wicca is), but about a mythology. It's way closer to Mary Poppins than anything else. If Rowling had chosen a word other than "witch" for her characters, none of this would be a problem. Suppose she wrote a book about a boy who discovered that he belonged to this mystical group of people who could control things around them in astounding ways. He went off to train because he wanted to be a...oh, I don't know...Jedi. Look! Now it's not evil anymore.

However, unless you can get your friend to read or watch Harry Potter and have a rational conversation with you about it, you're unlikely to change her mind. I think you're probably just going to have to let her raise her kids as she sees fit. I think she's wrong, but she's doing the best she can.

I've never heard her say that she practices it, at all, but I have heard her say that she believes in magic. Doesn't mean she's evil, by any means. It just means that she's a dreamer, which is by no means a bad thing.

As far as I know, J.K. Rowling isn't a witch. It isn't as if it is bad, or any of anyone's business...and that answer IS from a Witch (me). She has, in fact, said she is a Christian.

I've never heard this, and it sounds *exactly* like the kind of malicious lie that extreme evangelicals would put around. I would ask your friend if she has any reliable evidence, rather than hearsay. if is is hearsay, how does she feel in participating in a modern day witch hunt, and does she want to bring back burning at the stake? This kind of nasty allegation (if, of course, it is) is the sort that destroys society.

She made up the story in the car on a wim driveing home. I heard the propeganda, and when I son wanted to read them, I went and bought him book 1. (he now has 5 of them) He was nine at the time, nut we do not shelter our children. (I was sheltered and not prepaired for rl from my upbringing) I read the books one by one. I am a christian and I saw nothing wrong with them. They are just amuseing stories about migic. The lion the Witch and the Wardrobe is thought to be a parable from the bible and is accepted, yet there is magic and a witch there to. Then the never ending Story, while not christian in content, the book and movie is still considered ok for children. If you ask me, I think some people just need to find something to hate. Currently my son is reading the Percy Jackson Series, (yes I read those to) It is about greek gods in the now, does that make that book evil to?

    It doesn't matter.
Everyone must answer to God for the way they accept or reject His Son.
Harry Potter is a story like Lord of the Rings is a story. The way the authors choose to tell the battle of good against evil, is what makes the difference I think. In Lord of the Rings, Gandalf is a Wizard who guides, and corrects, others in the way they should fight against the great evil in the world. He flies on the backs of great Eagles, does battle with giant demons, and rescues those he can who face being wiped out in their quest against that great evil.
Harry Potter flies on stereo typical witch-like devices, uses witch-like sayings etc. But the real heros in the Lord of the Rings are the Hobbits. The smallest, frailest, and fearful out of the whole bunch. The Hobbits do not use witch craft, or it's devices to get where they are going. You see, there are many, many more "differences" between the way movies portray the fight against good, and evil.
As parents we are to teach, protect, train up our children in love. If you want to let your child watch Harry Potter, and than just let them, "figure it out them selves", than in my opinion, you are NOT raising that child in real love. I would say that to you, Entertainment is more important to you than how you raise your child. So is Harry Potter OK to watch?
That doesn't matter, all that matters is; are you going to raise you child as a parent, or take the attitude like some and say, "they can figure it out themselves?

Curiosity didnt kill the cat. I did.

well if they're overly religious, you can take them the book titled "Finding God in Harry Potter." it was written by a preacher.
me being brought up in church, i know the hysteria surrounding harry potter and the fact that many people believe that it is "evil" because of its use in magic. but my rebuttal to this is, "do you allow your children to watch Cinderella, Snow White, or any other disney story? because all of those have magic in them." according to christian doctrine, sin is sin is sin. so magic is magic is magic no matter what pretext it is in. as far as JK Rowling practicing witchcraft, thats a load of crap. i read an article somewhere rebutting this statement (the article had quotes directly from Rowling), but i cant remember where exactly. why don't you google it?

If you ask me, the whole series is a loose metaphor for Christianity anyway, and the morals that are demonstrated are good, so I don't really see why anyone would have any problems.

  • Nah. She may have delved into a lot to do with it for research, but she is not a practicing witch.

JK Rowling does NOT practice witchcraft.
Some people are just scared of ideas and need excuses to justify their points, nothing against your friend of course.
Now, I've gone to a Catholic School all my life and everyone in my grade school was just as hyped up about how great HP is as the general public. In fact, my principal, who teaches many of the religion classes, loves Potter. We would have these great big discussions in Religion class about how strong the morals portrayed in the book are. We would dissect Harry Potter to show how it demonstrates living a Christian life. It's very much a Christian allegory like The Chronicles of Narnia. I, personally, have become a stronger, more understanding, and more compassionate being through reading Harry Potter. It makes the reader WANT to do something great for all of humanity, even if destroying Voldemort is out the question.

Witchcraft and Magick/ Magic is a belief just like Christianity. I expect Christians to respect it.
